The mask of Ursul (the Bear) — danced from house to house between Christmas and New Year, through the villages of Moldavia. Drums, red tassels, stamping feet.
The story of the piece
At the tamer's call, the Bear dances in a circle, falls as if dead and is raised again — one year dies, another is born. Under the heavy pelt, the dancer is no longer man, nor yet bear. The piece keeps that threshold: a surface modelled like fur melted into silver, heavy in the palm, no one left beneath.
